Ethiopia Tebe Melge Natural

Ethiopia Tebe Melge Natural

Light Roast

Tebe Melge from Guji’s vast Uraga forest region is our first Ethiopia natural of the season - it’s safe to say we love it when this time rolls around! The coffee jumped out at us with its clean and juicy profile. While there are some berry notes like you would expect in a Guji natural, it has more of a fresh strawberry, juicy peach, and floral orange blossom profile. The terroir really sparkles through on this, more influenced by the soil, the varieties, the forest canopy, the weather, and less influenced by a heavy handed fermentation technique. Enjoy this special coffee this summer for a limited time.

The Story Behind the Coffee

From our importer Red Fox:

Tebe Melge Natural’s sourcing area all falls between 1900 and 2300 masl, incredible altitudes that are just one part of what makes them so special. One of the most interesting aspects of the Tebe Melge area is that the trees here are the youngest in the larger region—fully mature, but still distinct in their profile. The microclimate plays a role too, with long, cool nights slowing cherry maturation. Natural processing is carried out with care, so that the terroir of Tebe Melge shines through as the main element of the final product.

The main challenge here is labor availability, and high wages per day guarantee access to the best cherry. There’s plenty of price competition too, with a lot of exporters vying for Tebe Melge’s unique profile. Security is another challenge for those working in or near this densely forested subregion.

Believe it or not, the stellar coffees within Guji Uraga were once trucked across the border to Yirgacheffe and sold there as Yirgacheffe coffees because no one had yet recognized their distinct character. Over a decade ago, Aleco Chigounis, who would go on to co-found Red Fox, tasted the coffees of Guji Uraga and knew they were unique, second to none, and deserving of differentiation. Now, this region is world-famous and the producers here benefit from competition for their coffees.
