Colombia Tacaloa

Colombia Tacaloa

Light Roast

Tacaloa farm is run by Martha Lucia Calle Ujueta, a woman who is dedicated to nurturing the land that is Granja Tacaloa with regenerative and organic practices. She really does it all – coffee cultivation, soil management, vegetable gardening, flowers, herbs, farm fish ponds, chickens, grazing cattle, honey bees, pet donkeys and generating organic compost to fertilize the coffee fields… and the list goes on. And this is all in retirement from a career in dentistry! We met the Low Calle family in the Spring of 2024. Martha’s daughter Ana Maria is a local and a customer at our cafes, and she connected us! We sampled the coffee, scored it at 85 points (a good score), and went about finding a way to facilitate the purchase and logistics to get it to us. Here we are 4 months after the harvest wrapped up and we are roasting Tacaloa - all 1232 pounds of it!

The Story Behind the Coffee

Notes from our Director of Coffee, Bobby Wrigley:

I got the opportunity to visit Granja Tacaloa for a day and a half on October 28th, 2024. I was traveling to Tolima, Colombia to visit another farm and judge/participate in the regional auction hosted by the department of agriculture. Martha and her husband Eduardo were very kind and picked me up from Bogota. Their farm is only a short distance away, about a 2 hour drive with traffic.

Tacaloa is a beautiful little oasis in Colombia, located in San Francisco, Cundinamarca. Martha Lucia Calle Ujueta has been running the farm since 2014 when she stepped in after her father passed. There is an ecological village right next to the farm, and the people there joke with Martha that she has her own ecological village. And it’s true, the farming is done in tandem with the soil and nature. The donkeys help carry up the steep hills all of the organic fertilizer that is generated on the farm, and Juan David the farm manager spreads this throughout the coffee trees. As you walk through the coffee fields you can feel the lively soil underfoot, it’s rich and soft, full of nutrients.

This is the first year Martha has ever sold to a buyer other than the federation. She always dreamed of finding a buyer that could better honor her dedicated work, instead of simply getting paid the market rate. This commercial transaction would blend her coffee into massive lots, losing all traceability. The region of San Francisco, Cundinamarca is not a region with an established specialty coffee industry. In places like Tolima, Huila, and Narino there are many more specialty coffee buyers providing farmers more market options. And for a small farm like Tacaloa, 6 total hectares with 2.5 in coffee production, it’s even harder to find a specialty buyer. It’s thanks to Ana Maria living here in Lansdale that we made this chance connection. We find the coffee from Tacaloa to be quite sweet, a very balanced cup with medium acidity so we are excited to continue the relationship year after year. You can really taste the dedication in the cup!
