Sustainability

Here at Backyard Beans, sustainability encompasses so much more than simply reducing waste. We believe in being stewards of the earth and champions for its people—environmentally, socially, and economically. Our commitment to sustainability shines through every aspect of our operation, from responsibly sourcing our coffee to reducing waste and conserving resources. Here's how we're making a positive impact:

B-Corp: A Global Third Party Non-profit

Backyard Beans Coffee Co. is built on the values of cooperation, care, and enthusiasm. We sought Certified B Corporation status because we believe our business can drive positive change and contribute to the greater good. Being a Certified B Corporation means we adhere to the high standards of social and environmental performance set by B Lab. For us, this certification represents more than an achievement; it embodies our dedication to a sustainable and ethical way of doing business.

  • What is B-Corp?

A certified B Corporation is a business that is purpose driven and prioritizes using business as a force for good. Businesses are awarded the “B Corp” certification after being audited by a third party non-profit that assesses the business as a whole, ensuring that it maintains environmental and social integrity. B Corp certification is tangible recognition that a company is committed to ethical and sustainable business practices.

  • Why B-Corp?

By becoming a B-Corp we are not only committed to our values of sustainability, equity and social justice, but are held accountable through verification by a third party organization. In addition, we get to join a group of like minded leaders and corporations that help drive this global movement of a more sustainable and equitable future for all.

  • How Does A Company Become B-Corp?

A rigorous self-assessment analyzing the company’s practices and the impact it imparts is required. The review is extensive and followed by proof of documentation and policies. A minimum of 80 points is required to obtain certification with a requirement of recertification every three years. This ensures that B Corps are improving or at the very least maintaining their high social and environmental standards.

Responsibly Sourced Coffee

At Backyard Beans, we're proud to work with importers who have direct relationships with coffee farmers. Whether they're coffee farmers themselves or importers located in the country of origin, these partnerships empower farmers to create sustainable growing systems and process their own coffees for optimal quality. By fostering transparent and equitable supply-chain relationships, we ensure that both farmers and importers are fairly compensated, all while delivering exceptional coffee to our customers.

Environmentally Efficient Roasting

Our investment in Loring Roasters reflects our commitment to environmental sustainability. These roasters use 80% less energy and emit 80% fewer emissions than standard roasters, thanks to their innovative design. By recycling hot air from the roaster drum and eliminating the need for an afterburner, we're reducing fuel usage and minimizing our environmental impact with every batch of coffee we roast.

Water Conservation in Cold Brew Process

In our commitment to water conservation, we've implemented a Clean In Place (CIP) system for equipment cleaning. This system measures the conductivity of chemicals and rinse water, allowing us to reclaim chemicals for future use and optimize water usage. With real-time monitoring of water neutrality, we've significantly reduced water consumption during cleaning and sanitization processes.

Reducing Food Waste - Composting

Partnering with local composting company BCS Compost, we're diverting waste from landfills and reducing our carbon footprint. Composting food scraps not only prevents the release of harmful methane gas but also enriches soil for future agriculture. By composting in our Lansdale kitchen and behind the coffee bar, we're taking meaningful steps toward a more sustainable future.

Recyclable Coffee Bags

We're proud to offer our coffees in recyclable coffee bags, which can be returned to our store for proper recycling. By collecting and responsibly disposing of these bags, we're closing the loop on waste and promoting a circular economy.

    One Tree Planted

Forests cover 31% of the global land area

We care deeply about the planet and creating a business that gives back to nature. That’s why we are partnering with One Tree Planted to plant a tree for every order placed on our website. Trees clean our air and water, create habitat for biodiversity, contribute to our health and wellbeing, and create jobs for social impact. We are honored to include supporting reforestation through One Tree Planted as an integral part of our business model.
