What Your Enneagram Says About Your Coffee Habits

With the vast array of brewing methods available, I have a hunch that people gravitate toward certain methods based on their personality types. For this thought experiment, let’s use the Enneagram as our guide. The Enneagram focuses on the why behind human behavior, emphasizing core motivations and fears. With that in mind, let’s jump right in.

1 The Reformer: Pour over
The Rational, Idealistic Type: Principled, Purposeful, Self-Controlled, and Perfectionistic
This method offers a refined and elegant cup of coffee, with plenty of variables to tweak to make the brew just perfect. Gone are the days of sub-par auto-drip, the pour over is the one for the Reformer.

2 The Helper: Pods
The Caring, Interpersonal Type: Demonstrative, Generous, People-Pleasing, and Possessive
Quick and easy, allowing the Helper more time to spend caring for the people around them. Bonus aspect is how easy it is for the Helper to offer their loved ones a cup of coffee.

3 The Achiever: Drive Thru
The Success-Oriented, Pragmatic Type: Adaptive, Excelling, Driven, and Image-Conscious
Forget the tedious brewing methods at home, the Achiever is likely grabbing a coffee from their local drive through on their way to their business meetings.

4 The Individualist: Siphon
The Sensitive, Withdrawn Type: Expressive, Dramatic, Self-Absorbed, and Temperamental
The Individualist and the Siphon are a match made in heaven. The title pretty much says it all. These brewers are a statement and a vibe, and quite temperamental to get just right. The uniqueness is the reward.

5 The Investigator: Espresso
The Intense, Cerebral Type: Perceptive, Innovative, Secretive, and Isolated
With endless brew parameters to play with and many data points to collect and track, home espresso provides a playground for the Investigator in search of the god-shot.

6 The Loyalist: Cafe
The Committed, Security-Oriented Type: Engaging, Responsible, Anxious, and Suspicious
Brewing coffee at home is great but for the Loyalists their preferred way of enjoying it is at their local cafe with an old friend. The warmth of a latte and the warmth of a friend, the perfect pairing for the Loyalist.

7 The Enthusiast: Cold Brew Cans
The Busy, Fun-Loving Type: Spontaneous, Versatile, Distractible, and Scattered
Mobile, available at the drop of a dime, energizing, and fun. The Enthusiast I suspect would prefer to have a stash of cold brew cans on hand. Be careful how much you drink because it is strong and can increase how scattered you get!

8 The Challenger: Aeropress
The Powerful, Dominating Type: Self-Confident, Decisive, Willful, and Confrontational
The Challenger types stand by their Aeropress brews and are not afraid to bring this thing anywhere to brew specialty coffee – airplane, desk at work, gas station on a road trip, or heck even at a restaurant.

9 The Peacemaker: Autodrip
The Easygoing, Self-Effacing Type: Receptive, Reassuring, Agreeable, and Complacent
Keep it simple, let the pot brew and don’t worry too much about all the variables that could be tweaked for a better cup, the Peacemaker just wants a good cup of coffee and enough to share.
What do you think about my pairings? Are there any you would change? Add? Let us know what your preferred way of brewing coffee is, and how it lines up with your personality. Bonus points if you know your Enneagram type.
