By now most of us can say that February has overstayed its welcome. The days are still short, motivation is hard to come by, and we can collectively agree that shoveling more snow was not on our checklist. For many of us, we fight back the fatigue and brain drain of winter with our morning cup of coffee. But why? It turns out there may be good science behind why that cup feels so essential this time of year.

Caffeine Solves Everything

With the shorter days, less sunlight and colder weather you might experience worsened mood, lower energy, or reduced motivation. Research suggests that regular coffee consumption may help counter these effects, with studies showing caffeine can produce sustained improvements in mood, alertness, and concentration throughout the day. A large analysis looking at data from hundreds of thousands of participants found that both coffee and caffeine consumption are significantly associated with a reduced risk of depression. That all sounds great, but what’s the science behind it?

The Effect on the Brain

The mood-lifting effects of caffeine come from how it interacts with the brain. The brain naturally produces adenosine, a chemical that slows the release of dopamine and glutamate (neurotransmitters associated with reward and mental energy). When caffeine is introduced to this system it starts blocking adenosine receptors, allowing those chemicals to flow more freely. This showed that consuming caffeine triggers a significant increase in dopamine and glutamate levels in the brain. This reaction in the brain’s control center is similar to other mood-altering substances, though with much less strength than “harder” stimulants.

Drink More Coffee?

So next time you think you need that 2PM ‘Cappy Hour’ boost to finish off the work day, you can tell yourself that there's scientific research supporting your decision. Have that second cup, and push through the last weeks of winter; Spring is right around the corner!
