The Story Behind the Coffee
COSAMAJ is a newly formed cooperative that has been established by farmers and for farmers. Lote El Sapito comes from one of their two washing stations and it is named after the geographical region there.
Don Emilio and his son Carlos are the ones behind this washing station. In 2018 they embarked on a mission to build a wet mill. This is quite the undertaking for any coffee farmer, especially one in Jilotepeque. This is a region where there is scarce access to water, rocky terrain, and few wet mills. The vision was to build the wet mill in order to form a cooperative with other nearby producers – selling their parchment, as opposed to unprocessed cherries, and doing this together as a group would increase opportunities for them.
Thanks to the seed his father has planted, and the hard work they have both put in, generation transfer is happening as Carlos is motivated to carry on the work of producing coffees with roasters in mind. Our import partner Collaborative Origins imports is doing a great job linking the producers at COSAMAJ to roasters like us here in the US.
